Afternoon Tea is a traditional afternoon meal that comprises finger sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and a selection of cakes and pastries, served with hot tea. It is generally taken as a late lunch, or to bridge the gap between lunch and a late dinner. Afternoon Tea is an elegant occasion, often enjoyed as a special treat or celebration. There’s no better way to discover a Scottish Afternoon Tea than to try it for yourself! We are introducing this traditional delight at the Fintry Manor House for select dates with limited bookings of tables of four on May 25th and June 1st with sitting times of 11:30am and 2:00pm.

History of Afternoon Tea

Tea has been a popular drink in Scotland since the 18th century. Originally, due to its high cost, it was only for the wealthy and reserved for special occasions. It was not until the late 19th century that it became accessible to all. From then on, the Scots have been a nation of tea drinkers. People drank tea at home, but also would go out to tea rooms to socialise. The Scottish tradition of High Tea began around this time. High Tea was the main meal at the end of the working day and consisted of a variety of cold dishes accompanied by hot tea. The concept of Afternoon Tea as we know it today famously began south of the border in England, with Anna, Duchess of Bedford. In around 1840, the Duchess complained of a ‘sinking feeling’ between lunch and her late evening meal. So she began taking tea and refreshments in the afternoon and invited friends to join her. When word got around to Queen Victoria, she adopted the custom herself and it became a fashionable afternoon ritual. Today, Afternoon Tea is served in tea rooms and hotel lounges across the UK. Each establishment may have its own take on the traditional offering, but they all tend to include finger sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, cakes and pastries. Hot tea is a must, but you can usually opt for coffee if you prefer.
